I made this shrimp house with bamboo charcoal, an excellent decor for a small tank. And an replacement for driftwood.
Charcoal adsorbs impurity and heavy metal from water and does not leak when saturated. The hollow centers provide refugee sites for small to mid shrimps and a gap is purposely created in middle for the same purpose.
That's stringy moss on it, still can't get in-water photo as the charcoal is not yet water logged.

Bamboo Charcoal? This's something new to an ignorant being like me, who've always thought that charcoal has always been made from wood. :p
Some interesting links:

Blenny, where did you buy such an interesting item? :)

Coryfav,
Bought it at HK. If you found it in SG, let me know. Regret for not buying more.
One of the link said BC can be used to make soap, isn;t it the more I wash, the dirtier my hands will be? lol

If you see the last link, you'll notice that it also mentioned one of its uses to be for an aquarium.
But I'm curious as to what really made you do this in the first place. Something you've read or seen?

Actually the use of BC in aquarium is quite common in other part of the world, arh with them, they will share tricks that we don't know of.
Now thinking of making a 4:3:2, wrap 3:2 with HC, it will be cool. :)
But to find more BC in local first, if u have time, go IMM, there is a zippoon supermart there, chances may have. Then can put BC everywhere in the house. :)

Hi,
the bamboo charcoal looks interesting. Never heard of it before. BTW, take some pictures of your stringy moss, I'm corious. How fast does it grow? Does it grow vertically?

I just realised that we have a Daiso here in Vancouver as well, was there yesterday and finally, they have the bamboo charcoal shown here by blenny. I bought some but will only assemble them later like blenny did and see what else I can put on them and see if anythng will grown on them too.
~am still waiting for blenny to show us his bamboo charcoal after so long~
Cheers

Well, it took me 6 months to go back to IMM again. :p
This's what I found and bought from Daiso. They've 3 lengths, I think, and I bought the shortest at 10cm. Meant to stick one into my Nano tank in the office yesterday, but was too busy to think about it. :screwed:
Anyway, if anyone's wondering, it costs $2 a box, like lots of other stuff in Daiso. :D

Bagged? As in 2x1ft long in a transparent bag? Then these boxes should be hung nearby.
Walk right in from the entrance... keep left... somewhere after the titbits section... against the wall on the left... should be somewhere there or nearby (if they decided to do some reshuffling). I overheard the salepersons calling these simply 'charcoal', so maybe you can check with them too. Print a copy of the box that I've posted and show them, if you like.
Or... perhaps they're sold out? :eww:

Oh, should be nearer to the household mops and stuff. :p

Let me get hold of the box... :p
According to what I understand from the pictures, (I hardly read Chinese, let alone Japanese  ) one can put these bamboo charcoal into the rice cooker, jug of drinking water and to keep humidity out and remove smell from folded clothes. Actually, there's one more pic, sort of a basin of water, but I don't understand what that's saying. :siam:
I've got a stick in my nano shrimp tank in the office, and so far all's well. :)

I think it should do fine in planted tanks!
It says that it releases trace elements such as sodium, calcium, iron and potassium!
So I guess jus need to monitor KH and GH, the rest should do fine!
