can build any size each person wants
as for me, I am eyeing at a 5ft x 1.5 x 1.5(8mm)
but my silicon work is real lousy.
I used to built my own top filter (biological type) still have it, very solid.
not very neat, but very practical.

interesting..
art do you think this can be made into a petfrd project ? :) of course to be done after your exams.
Frankly , if you are not confident of doing a good job , i suggest you DO NOT try to make your own tank.
Is not just a matter of silicon and glass. Still must think of alignment , whether even a not etc etc
Moreover where you going to get 5ft sheet of glass ?
Not to put you down or anything but if it were me , i would go buy one to have peace of mind. :)
my 2 cents

if no confidence, maybe can start with a 2ft ones first.
used to know of a guy who go around his neighbourhood collecting discarded window pane glass and converting them into tanks.
I used to help him out.
Practice make perfect, I guess.
of course, buying is anytime more re-assuring lah, it's the cost.
glass can get from glass suppliers, can even have tempered type.
I think it will be just a fraction of the cost.

if we work in a group, we can help and learn from each other.
Maybe if do with someone who already doing tanks then can pick up what to look out for :)

doing 2ft tank is just for practice, not really worth the while.
a 2ft tank cost only $18, I think the material cost is around the same or more.
Making a bigger tank might be different, I realy dunno, haven't do any costing yet.
But the thrill of making yr own tank should be great.

Remember the saying' Too many cook spoil the soup'? Later u cannot align the glass pane properly.

bingyan, start small first, perhaps with a 1ft or 2ft tank. it's not easy to control the amount of silicon. and laying it on the seams between the glass panes takes alot of patience and skill. air bubbles trapped in the silicon can cause the silicon to give way if the pressure gets too high. and too much silicon at any corner will give it an unsightly look.
