Due to its limited space, it would be advisable to utilise the little space provided. Get the coarse black foam that is available in the market. Normally the fish shop will sell exactly the size and shape as your top filter. If extra space permits, get some biohome as they r able to trap the most amount of bacteria to aid your biological filtration. :)

black foam? can i assume that it is lined with active carbon? if so, can i just lay my media in this sequence top to botton: white cotton, active carbon, biohome(is it those black funny looking balls?),white cotton.
thank you

Nope it is not lined wit carbon. Biohome is shaped like a cone and it is actually sinstered glass, maybe u can go fish shop and ask. I noe petmart n Nature sell them.
Top layer where there is first contact of water, u put the cotten wool to filter any big particles. The second and last layer are black foam n biohome respectively for effective biological filtration.
Carbon is not really necessary as it is gd to remove colouring and medicine fr the water. :)
