$290 would be way out of my budget. Probably cost more than the fish, tank and stand, lock, stock and barrel. LOL.
How about the Eheim Classic? Saw that it only cost about $120 at QianHu. Is it good enough for a 2-2½ft tank?
Are all Eheim accesories standard? I mean noting that Eheim Classic may be outdated, can I still use accesories from later models to fit it?
How about the Eheim Ecco? Or the Atman?

Eheim classic is totally different fr the newer pro series so the accessaries wise, dun think will be usable. Somemore the newer version has parts that the classic dun have. If u r keeping a planted tank, ecco 2233 will be just enough and it costs less than $150. :)
Wat kind of setup is the tank for ?

For a 2 or 2½ ft planted tank.
Since its a planted and a reasonably small tank , i would say an Eheim Ecco would suffice , or a 2222-2224 Eheim Pro model....perhaps a second hand one would better suit your budget.
Should cost under $100 for these models now.

Which shop would you recommend for me to get the filters at the price range?
Avery , if you plan to get the Ecco , drop by Nature Aquarium , Mr Chan's prices are very reasonable :)
As for the 2222/4 , I am not too sure if he still has stock for them , but I would suggest you scout and keep a look out for them at second hand places , like the Singnet classifieds , or the classifieds forums here and at other forums.

Wind, if you are not going planted, best is try the wet/dry, best value for money.

Schumy, first off welcome to the forums :)
Well the wet dry is also commonly known as the top filter ( for this particular one we are recommending )
Can be gotten from most LFS , i would recommend the Dyna series , quiet and powerful :)
Should cost around $20+ depending on the model and place of purchase

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Is the top filter also know as overhead filter?
Thanks

Go to arofanatics.com under the "tank setup for arowana" section, and look under the thread 5 ft OH, got 3 to 4 long threads on Overhead wet/dry. Can consider top filter also, but we are not talking about those 2 ft one layer type, its those stackable types.
