I have bought the Eheim 2260 filter and have been running it for about 7 months, I have a 1500 lts fish tank. In these 7 months I have had to empty and clean it only twice. What other information do you need.

Basing on your perimeters, your output versus literage seem okay, you should not empty the filter completely and clean, but do partial cleaning to prevent a massacre of your NB.

Having said that...it will very much depend on your bioload and are you rearing high waste producing fish like Koi and Goldfish.

Thanks for your message. In my tank I have 8 banded leporinus, 6 Cyphotilapia frontosas, 7 clown loaches, 1 green arrowana. Also in addition to the Eheim 2260 I am running an Ocean Clear filter driven by a magdrive 9.5 pump and a powehead which drives the water through a UV to a marineland bio wheel pro 60. I am now thinking of replacing the Ocean Clear filter and buying either an Eheim 2080 or 2229. My 2260 is filled with ceramic beads and a fine mesh pad on the top. I rotate the cleaning between the filters.

That is my tank set up for you. Constructive criticism or useful advice is always welcome.

I guess your Ocean Free Filter is either a Hang On or Top filter.

From you set up, I don't think you need another filter, instead try looking at your Media set up to improve on your waters perimeters.

Am I right to say that water in your tank should be Crystal Clear?

Use higher grading media, to extend your miantenance cycle.

have fun....

My 2 cents worth.

The Ocean Clear (poly bead Mech & Bio filter) is a big canister filter and the pump is a magdrive 9.5 which pumps out 950 gph. It is not a hang on or overhead model. The reson I am thinking of replacing this filter is that the pump consumes 95 watts of electicity otherwise I have no problem per say with it. I have used this filter now for over 2 years and have not had to open it even once, it has the most amazing back wash feature. My filter has not been opened or moved ever since I installed it. This filter uses small ball bearing size poly beads as the media.

My tank dimensions are 7 feet lenght, 2 feet width and 4 feet height.

Yes I do have crystal clear water but what do you mean by higher grading media.

looking forward to receiving more sugesstions.

2260 from EHEIM have a back wash function.

Bio Media Grading

Bio Ball 1.7sqm per lit
Sera Siporax 270 sqm per lit
Dennerle 350 sqm per lit
Eheim SubStrat Pro 450 sqm per lit

Above means the effectiveness of NB colonization.

I agree the Eheim 2260 has a back wash facility but it is useless. The eheim 2260 back wash works on the priciple that water from the outlet flows in the reverse order and flushes the filter but the moment the water level in the tank falls below the spray bar then the back wash stops. So the media does not get clean but only the bigger particles that are trapped below the plastic mesh are washed away.
