I know a lot of you out there have the non priming version of Ehiem filters. I too use them until recently I bought some Pro II. Anyway, I saw how useful the priming the Pro II is and decided to develop a cheap and good method to prime my 2213.

1. Get a $4 gravel cleaner or so call water changing pump. The one with blue pump.

2. Cut the hose COMING into the blue pump. leaving around 10 cm connected to it. (now call the " Shortened pump")

3. Besure the inflow opening of the hose will fit into your outlet U tube or 2222/2224 outflow tube.

4. Fill your canister and inflow tube connected to your canister with water.

5. Fit the shortened pump's inlet to the outlet of the the canister's outflow tube. (DO not switch on your filter)

6. Squeeze the blue pump to start the priming. You will see water flowing out. Do it for 2 times or more if required to fill the filter with water. (if you use valves for 2213 or 2215 turn it on)

7. Disconnect the shortened pump from the filter and turn on the filter. Wa la you have the cheapest and non mouth sucking priming.

Feel free to comment as I may not be clear enough on this.

Actually thought of that before already, but felt that it looks ugly with that "pump" there, and also it traps slime and debris inside the "pump", just like your hoses, but the difference is that hose can be clean but the "pump" cannot.

Another thing is that the "pump" inside got two small pieces of plastic at both openings which air/water will push it open and it will close when there is no air pressure or water going past. This two pieces of plastic sometimes get stuck and don't move, that explains why sometimes when we doing gravel cleaning but that thing sometimes refuse to start siphoning.

So eventually I used the eheim taps and manual siphon (drink tankwater), only have to do it once, after that with the eheim taps there is no need to drink tankwater anymore.

Non mouth priming!! :D

Your method is definitely economical but if u spend a bit more, u can actually get a powerhead and this works incredibly fast. :)

Innovative, many people use this too :)

Want an even cheaper pump ? Go any HW store, they sell such pumps for $1.50 :D:D

Hi, thanks for sharing your views. I think lefthorn may have mistaken that the pump leaves on the hose. I acutally do not leave it on. Please see the Step 7. It is disconnected so it is only for priming not to act as part of the filter.

therefore no cleaning of the pump is required. After step 7 turn the filter on. If is not disconnected the filter will not run.
