Hi,

was wondering if anyone would like to share their experience with the different substrates you have in your tank and the effect in a photo.

e.g.
black substrate
dark brown
brown etc

Any comments on the colour of substrate with respect to the effect in the photo. How about the kind of substrate.

Any thoughts?

and that in their experience which one has been kindest on the fishes (i.e. the effect) or which one has been harshest etc. Any and every thoughts on substrate wrt to pics

philtre,

I think the colour of the substrate will depend on the colour of the fishes.

Neon tetra looks great with darker coloured substrate because of colour contrast.

Any comments on that?

Agreed.

Light coloured fishes with darker coloured background and vice versa

agree to a certain extent. any neutral colours that are easier to work with? brown etc?

also, eg for mid level fishes, the colour of the substrate would probably not be as important as bottom dwellers.

Any comments?

The dennerle quartz gravel series have very nice n rich colors. Its soft n cory friendly (even tho its "quartz") and really brightens up the tank.
The downside is that it produces a lot of foam initially and somehow, my fish dont do well with that substrate. :dunnoe:
