not painted properly, have to waste money to buy paint and make repairs.

but i notice that even if the entire stand is painted properly, the bottoms of the stands..the ends of the legs will rust quite easily...
i always apply some wd40..some anti rust chemical..or i oil them to prevent rust...

Wow in this case better to just settle for stainless steel racks ... about the same price too .

Stainless steel nowadays so cheap ah? Art beware, lotsa stainless steel stand "steal work cut material". The metal is thin and the bars are skinny, sometimes dot welded, not full welded. One push the tank fall down liao.

Last quoted at C328 was $68 for a 2ft 3 tier stainless steel rack without delivery.
Seems a rather reasonable price
Looks rather sturdy... i think :D

Art: maybe next time u want to buy the stainless stell stand, ask me along so that I can sit on it to test the steadiness. LOL:D

Maybe can try try those shop that sell stainless steel stall for hawkers. It may be cheaper and hardier than those found in LFS

It will rust faster if you heavily use salt in tank.

Remove the rust with WD40, clean the surface with brasso, and paint lacquer and multiple coats of colored paint over it, and another layer of lacquer.

Haha bro , stand also will cry out in pain ! haha :D

Those hawker racks dont think they can tahan the weight of fully loaded tanks unless you specifically tell them to make it such that it can tahan certain amt of weight but probably ends up the same price if not more for "customization"..

An uncle in a LFS, when I casually asked if wrought iron stand will rust, smiled, looked around and said, "Don't let it touch water too often, sure will rust. Those who tell you 'won't rust', is bluff one!"

Stainless steel stand, the black ones, right? Have you seen the 2-tier type which the top can be removed (probably for easy access to bottom tank during initial setup or something)? I once saw, a brand-new piece at a LFS, one of the brackets already dangling!

I'm still deciding what to use for a 'possible' new 2ft quarantine tank.

I thought the stainless steel ones are the shining chrome ones?
How could it possibly be black?

Those DIY-assembly types are wrought iron too, but with black proxy-coat.

Oh, I see!:p

So looks like the stainless steel chrome one is the best to buy?:)

Hi,

stainless steel doesn't shine like chrome. Chrome is just a coating and it can peel off, leaving the bare metal which can rust.

Stainless steel has a matt appearance and if there are signs of "rust" on the stainless steel, it can just be wipe off using the green wool.

Stainless steel stand is a better buy since "wrought iron" stands can rust. I've seen it before.

I have stainless steel before, the metal is not as sturdy as iron, so I reverted back to cast iron stands those arowana hobbist use, but I sent the stand thru hot dip galvanising, after that it can withstand marine conditions. Or you may want to try powder coating processes. With small stands, I dont bother and just use whatevers cheap.

leaf, what does hot dip galvanising do for the stand ?
Strengthen the metal ? Or make it anti rust ?

Zinc galvanising, you know the zinc oxide thingy that forms upon contact with air oxygen, the zine oxide is extremely resistant to corrosion, hot dip galvanising dips the iron into molten zinc, the surface is coated with zinc, and beneath forms alloy with zinc also. After drying, zinc oxide is form, giving the metal an ugly grey look, like our road lamp post, all galvanised. If the surface is ever scratched, new oxide is formed again to repair the wound, and thats the best part of it. Metal parts of marine vessels are galvanised or powder coated. Powder coating is another interesting process to almost totally combat rust.

Metal parts of construction structures near shorelines are all galvanised. Can last forever don't rust.

Just do a search on "powder coating", or "hot dip galvanising" lotsa info will come up. If you are planning a fish room, its worth it, the more you do one time the cheaper. Last time I do my 4 ft stand, added another $100 bucks for the galvanising process for just one stand.
